Lions Share have been quiet for the past six years, their last album came in 2001 and was called ENTRANCE and the only remaining original member is bandleader/mastermind Lars Chriss. This album includes guest appearances by famous names like Bruce Kulick, Glen Drover on guitar and Mats Levén on vocals.
When I put on my older albums with the band it struck me that Lions Share sounds very different today. Now they have a more melodic heavy metal influenced by both progressive and doom metal compared to before. This album sounds simpler (in a good way) and not as fuzzy as the previous ones did. Lead singer Johansson sound as powerful as always and he is no doubt one of the better singers in the world now. Guitarist Chriss delivers heavy and edgy riffs in a brilliant way and he has definitely not forgotten how to handle a guitar during the bands absence from the scene.
Amongst the 11 tracks there is a cover by the Angel Witch song “Sorcerers”, all of the material are great and there’s nothing bad to say about the song at all. Johansson sure brings another dimension to the songs with his amazing voice and this comeback is one of the better albums by Lions Share. Chriss has done an amazing album at least in my estimation. The big question is what are the older fans of the band going to think of this little different musical approach the band have taken on. The brilliant production focuses on lead vocals and Chriss’ varied guitar play, and the production done by Ronny Lahti (Saigon Kick, Europe, Glenn Hughes, Electric Boys, and Roxette etc) sure works in favor of the band.
EMOTIONAL COMA is a great comeback album and it gets me going on every level. They could not have done a much better album than this and it will elevate the band to a higher place. Now I only hope to see the band live on stage and don’t dare to miss Lion Share if they’re coming to a stage near you.
