Formed in 2001, Lesra hails from the northern city of Umea (home of Meshuggah and Naglfar) and was founded by vocalist/guitarist Erik Lindberg and guitarist Per Johannesson. This demo, recorded over a weekend in early 2004, sounds very professional and it’s obvious the band invested some time and money into its production. I was under the impression that metalcore was strictly a North American phenomenon. Who knew they played it in Sweden? Lesra plays aggressive metal fused with hardcore vocals and lots of double bass drumming. Lindberg’s vocals drift between a gruff roar and hardcore holler. If this is your type of thing (and it is mine), this demo will be right up your alley.
“All Ends Here” has a very full sound and the drums are absolutely punishing. A cool guitar solo also slips in. “The Laughing Corpse” contains some memorable riffs and an excellent vocal from Lindberg. “Murder Is My Only Voice” opens with a cool intro and features another great solo from Johannesson. Immediately after the solo, there is a heavy section that kicks in around the 2:15 mark and the double bass drumming of Robert Wiberg is jaw-dropping. With Lindberg screaming, “I’ll rip your soul to shreds” at the same time, this is the key moment on this disc. “12 Gauge Equality” is more of a mid-tempo track and is also my least favorite on the CD. It’s still a strong track but not quite up to speed with the other three.
If there is any doubt as to how good Lesra is, they just landed the opening slot on the Umea date of Cannibal Corpse’s European tour (Sept. 27th). I would love to check these guys out but seeing as I’m on the west coast of Canada, that seems unlikely. However, when they break and begin headlining North America, I’ll be the first in line.
