Leverage
Tides
October 2006
Released: 2006, Elements Music
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Some of you have surely become familiar with a Finnish Heavy Rock band called Brother Firetribe (feat. Emppu Vuorinen from Nightwish) who's debut album FALSE METAL has been very well received by the metal community. If you loved the vocals on it - amongst other things, here´s more of the same vocals, being offered through one other Finnish Heavy Rock band by the same calibre.

Leverage is a kind of sensational new Finnish Hard/Heavy Rock band who´s fronted by the same guy - Pekka Heino, who also did the vocals for Brother Firetribe´s debut album. As for Leverage, the band´s debut album, TIDES, has already been gaining rave reviews from different publications from all around the globe – and after spinning the album over and over again, I don´t wonder a bit at all, why actually. This is, dare to I say, one of the most surprisingly pleasing releases of the year so far, full of incredibly catchy and potentially strong traditional ´80s Hard/Heavy Rock.

Leverage draws its main musical influences from such bands as Europe, Gotthard and the likes, but especially from Rainbow, and has also got a few spices from AOR (Journey, Kansas, etc.) and progressive metal (Dream Theater) as well – and all these musical elements from the aforementioned genres have successfully been melted together on TIDES. The band´s strong resources are capability to understand how to fish all those biggest and most delicious single notes from this open vast sea of different musically rewarding genres; put them in the right order and just make the best out of them. It all sounds very inspiring, strongly passionate and still somehow fresh – and this certain outstandingly ear-licking recipe that has been put live through their songs, is a real recipe of the winners.

Naming the so-called immediate stand-out songs out of TIDES, is somewhat needless and not worth of time because all the ten songs, have rightfully earned their place on the album. Even if there´s 3 songs out of 10 songs on TIDES that could fit into the category of ballad – or semi-ballad songs, one might think those 3 ballads would make this record somehow tedious or soporific listen to, but actually those three ballads (“Horizon”, “Stranger” and “Gone”) fit perfectly into the album´s content by bringing a necessary amount of the needed diversity for the wholeness. On the other hand, without such songs as “Superstition”, “”Follow Down That River (absolutely the catchiest number on TIDES – simply superb!)” and “Twilight Symphony (very Rainbow´ish flavored)”, obviously TIDES would miss some of that instant status to become one of the greatest, most carefully composed and well-crafted debut albums made by a Heavy Rock band of this very century.

To predict a bright and successful future for Levarage from a crystal ball is somewhat unnecessary once you have hear TIDES – just mark my words for that! ;o)
