Kelly Simonz’s Blind Faith
The Rule of Right
May 2003
Released: 2003, Lion Music
Rating: 3.2/5
Reviewer: Rick

Kelly Simonz has become a bit of a familiar face here at He has had his previous 2 releases reviewed by at least 3 staff members who all listen to varying types of metal. The consensus seems to be that though Kelly is a multi talented musician his music doesn’t really have an identity of its own. His neoclassical style is similar to that of Malmsteen but he hasn’t quite reached the next level and differentiated himself from the plethora of Yngwie clones. Not that that is all bad. I would take an army of Yngwie influenced shredders over the crap that’s on the radio today. THE RULE OF RIGHT is the latest disc from Simonz who hails from Japan and has previously released is SIGN OF THE TIMES (1998) and SILENT SCREAM (1999).

It is easy to see that Simonz can shred with the best of em. “Destiny” sounds like it could have been lifted from a Trilogy era Yngwie album and “Now Your Turn” features Simonz just blazing up and down the fretboard. His sound on this CD has developed into a bit more or a powermetal influenced concoction. The yngwieisms are still there but now there is a definite lurking influence from among others Stratovarius which is evident especially on the title track. Simonz also has his usual repertoire of AOR tracks and ballads. “Still” is a love song that is focused on piano while “Splendid Grief” is basically a piano solo.

Simonz again has released a diverse album that runs the gamut from shred to aor to classical. While his strength is his musical diversity I think this is also one of his drawbacks. If he concentrated on one style of music and made his release more focused I think he would reach a wider audience. As it is now, though obviously a gifted musician, his varied material seems unfocussed and could potentially stop his music from reaching a wider audience. Lets hope that doesn’t happen because he has all the tools needed to be a top notch act for many years to come.
