Khymera
A New Promise
March 2006
Released: 2005, Frontiers Records/Atenzia Records
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

The mastermind behind Khymera is Daniele Liverani (main performer and composer of the Genius rock opera). When they released the debut album Khymera was only considered as a project that included Steve Walsh as singer and main songwriter but Kip Winger, Jim Peterik, Russ Ballard and Neal Schon also contributed with material as well, Mike Slamer did the mixing and Billy Greer sang b-vox. Today Khymera is a proper band and now it’s time to release a follow up. Steve Walsh is out of the band and now it’s Dennis Ward, the bassplayer from Pink Cream 69, that handles the lead vocals. Dennis fills up the void Steve left in a perfect way. All the members Daniele, Dario and Tommy are great musicians with talent and the music is excellent.

Khymera’s music includes melodic hardrock with main focus on lead vocals divided with keyboard and guitar. The guitar parts are very melodic generally except for a few songs where Tommy does a more edgier effort. Once again outside songwriters are used, in this case they are Robin and Judith Randall, Jeff Scott Soto, Dan Barnes, Tom and James Martin and believe it or not Ronan Keating !? Maybe Ronan has written the corny ballads because of course they are a few of those included amongst these 13 tracks. The album was produced by Daniele and mixed by Dennis.

It’s the stronger songs that keep this album alive otherwise it doesn’t happen so much unfortunately. Sure, the album is nicely produced and a lot of talented musicians are involved but that’s not enough, it needs solid material as well and that’s something this albums lacks. There’s too many ballads, 5, and this album is strictly for fans of Pink Cream 69 that want to hear Dennis sing or hardcore Daniele Liverani fans.

Killer tracks, “Alone”, “Let It Burn”, “You Can’t Take Me”, “Tomorrow Never Comes”, “Fields Of Fire”.
