Our Journey Through The Woods
February 2009
Released: 2008, Vendlus Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Mr. Rock

OUR JOURNEY THROUGH THE WOODS is the re-release of the Klabautamann’s 2003 self-released debut disc.

All throughout OUR JOURNEY THROUGH THE WOODS, the German band (Tim Steffens and Florian Toyka,) play very competent metal, but the problem is that nothing really stands out for me. It’s all very (shrugs) “yeah, this is ok”… I do like what they are doing, but in all honesty, this disc could have been done by just about any other black metal band out there.

As far as the songs go, you can skip past track 1, I never understood why the bands like this had to put an intro on, and then call it a ‘song’. Sorry, but to me it’s just filler until the first real song comes on. “Trolldance” has a cool groove to it, but I find that “Rabenmorgen” goes on a bit too long, as does “Seaghost”. The classical, instrumental “Elfentanz” seems a little out of place here, and at 3:19, it too goes on a little long. The highlight of the disc is “Tower of Sorcery”, it is fast and about as brutal as they come. The definite gem of the bunch.

I dunno about this one, I’m kind of on the fence. Yes, the band plays well, and the production is pretty good, but I think the area that needs a little work, in order to make the band stand out, is the songwriting. It’s not bad, but it needs some work in order to push the band to bigger leagues. Not a bad disc, just not great.
