Koma
Sakeo
January 2009
Released: 2007, Maldito Records Rating: 2.5/5 Reviewer: Simon Lukic Never heard about Koma? Never had I before listening to SAKEO. Well they’re Spanish and onto their seventh album. That’s all the information I got because I’m not fluent in the bands native language and couldn’t read the bio or website I stumbled on. Ah well… Moving onto the music (and before you ask, yes Koma do not sing in English), it is a mix of Motorhead infused rock with a touch of Sepultura and At War. Why At War? I’m sure, but Koma have that punchy attack the underrated three-piece had. The album starts well with the first half delivering a solid batch of tunes that are heavy, energetic and catchy but the quality nosedives soon after with a number of less focussed tracks. We get an acoustic track, a funky track, a straight ahead rock track and a groove lead track that gives you an entirely new impression of Koma as a band. Had SAKEO started off in the is way I probably would have found it difficult to get to the end, I mean during the second half of the album Koma sounds like Los Lobos played through Marshall stacks. Not a good thing. In the end SAKEO proves to be inconsistent. What was a promising beginning went off the rails at the half way mark and lost me as a listener. A shame as Koma is a talented band with the ability to write memorable tunes. ![]()
