King Diamond
The Spider's Lullaby
March 2016
Released: 1995, Metal Blade
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

This is a re-release of King Diamond's 1995 album The Spider's Lullaby. Scary to think this album is over 20 years old.

King Diamond (and also Mercyful Fate) were very prolific in the 1990s which was a very testing time for true and metal bands. Even though it was a tough time, looking back now there were actually many classic albums released by classic bands and many new metal bands. Gamma Ray, Helloween and Saxon started their comeback and many new bands such as Stratovarius and Hammerfall breaking through. So how do King Diamond fare looking back? Not much had changed from his 1980s albums, and not much changed on his last album from 2007.

The album starts with a few upbeat numbers, before the church organs and spooky sounds appear. There is a doomy segment in the style of what Black Sabbath did with their mid 90s Tony Martin albums. There is of course an Alice Cooper influence popping up from time to time, but fans of the band will already know all of this. With this release you get three bonus tracks with are demo versions of Moonlight, From the Other Side, The Spider's Lullaby and Dreams. As usual these are good to hear a few times but nothing too exciting.

I had the original album on vinyl so hard to tell the improvements in sound and mastering but all sounds good to me. Still sounding natural and not compressed.
