Love Songs and Other Nightmares
December 2014
Released: 2014, Sony Music Entertainment
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Heavy metal band Kilmara, hailing from Barcelona, Spain, has been very active in recent years, with this year’s LOVE SONGS AND OTHER NIGHTMARES being their third full-length release since 2007. It’s not the epic pace of a one-man black metal band, but if you consider that the band has been around in one form or another since 1999, it’s certainly an up-tick in activity. The band has also raised their profile quite a bit; their first two albums were independent affairs, with cover art to match, while this album has the support of Sony Music Entertainment. It appears that Kilmara is a band on the way up.

Musically, the band plays a crunchy, aggressive form of hard rock/heavy metal, with occasional (and thankfully fleeting!) influences from metalcore. Worry not though, the metalcore pops up early in the track list and disappears rather quickly. The band is technically competent and Christian Kohl’s vocals are appropriately gruff and unique. The songs run the gamut from full-on heavy metal (“Fantasy”), to hard rock and quieter ballads. In fact, the ballads (“Believe” and “Time Flies”) are two of the more enjoyable cuts on the album, with the latter featuring some nice, Savatage-style in-the-round vocals. The whole package is wrapped in a nice, clear and electric production that highlights the band perfectly.

If I have one complaint about the band, it’s their lyrics. To be kind, they are badge-on-sleeve earnest (read: twee) which, coupled with the gruff vocals and hard guitars, are somewhat incongruous.

That being said, LOVE SONGS AND OTHER NIGHTMARES is an enjoyable album that won me over the more I listened to it.
