Growing up, I was taught to follow the old advice of "if you can't say anything good, then don't say anything at all." Sound advice. But sometimes you get exposed to things that are so bad it's damn near impossible to hold your tongue. Take the movie "Batman and Robin" for example. It's been over two years since I've seen it and my friends and I still talk about how horrendous a picture it was. Once I even heard it described as a "festering pile of dog vomit". Harsh yes, but an accurate description nonetheless. Which brings me now to the subject at hand... Killer Khan.
When EvilG sent this CD to me for review, he described it as "a poor man's Ozzy". And once I heard it for myself, I had to agree. Khan's vocals are a cheap imitation of the Ozz-Man himself and the music is a cheap imitation of Ozzy/Black Sabbath. While listening to Kill Devil Hills, all I could think was that I'd heard this stuff before... And done better. Not only does the music suffer from a total lack of originality, but it's not played well either. If these guys were still in junior high I'd say they have potential, but unfortunately they do not.
I probably shouldn't say this... Ah, what the hell... When I opened EvilG's package and looked at the disc, the title "Kill Devil Hills" and accompanying cover art just screamed "REDNECK BAND!!!". I had a great laugh when I read the credits and saw that this CD was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee (Possibly the only place on Earth where the glorification of rednecks is an acceptable practice.) My assumption was again reinforced by song titles such as "Wicked Chimes of the Southern Bells", "The Alamo", and "Metal Death Star" (To associate this band with anything Star Wars ought to be considered blasphemy!). The reason I say all this is because I live in a small town that's full of rednecks and I've learned over time to "spot' em a mile away". ("Lissen up, fellers... Der's gold in Keel Dev'l ‘Eels!!!" Hahaha...) The only time I could ever imagine enjoying this band is if I headed out in my pickup truck with friends for a rousing evening of drinking and cow tipping... And I don't think I'll be doing that anytime soon.
Of course, this is just my opinion (albeit a somewhat scathing one). To be fair, go to the official Killer Khan website http://www.killerkhan.com
and check them out for yourself. As for me, I'll continue to work on following Mom's advice of keeping a still tongue/fingers.
