Sweet Lick of Fire
August 2001
Released: 2001, Sanctuary Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Pete

G certainly knows how to pick 'em when sending out CDs to be reviewed. Kick are a five-peice out of London, England and this is their second release, though their first for Sanctuary Records. Melodic hard rock is what best describes Kick (who by the way lifted their name from an INXS album). This 11 track CD ranges in style from the harder-edged "Inhibition", to the balladesque "Painless", this band should have a bright future ahead of them.

"Behind Closed Doors" draws you in with its Dream Theatre-like textures, while the hook in the chorus of "Time" will stick in your head for days. It's refreshing to hear somebody actually give a damn about melody these days. An abundance of this material was written by bassist Mikey J.(one of two brothers in the band) with assistance from vocalist Nick Worthman on 3 of the 11 tracks.

A nod to Worthman for some great vocal work on the album. Unfortunately I haven't heard their first release, but SWEET LICK OF FIRE is a winner. To find out more about Kick, check out their official website at:
