With the lukewarm response to the Genius Rock Opera, Daniel Liverani has returned with his latest musical venture called Khymera. This time his partner in crime is Kansas vocalist Steve Walsh. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of Kansas so I didn’t even realize that Walsh was still on the scene but he has hooked up with Liverani for this disc that is 12 tracks of melodic rock. Along for the ride is co-producer Mike Slamer (Steelhouse Lane, Streets) and a multitude of songwriters including Russ Ballard (Rainbow), Reb Beach (Winger, Dokken), Kip Winger and Neal Schon (Journey, Bad English, Hardline).
Khymera is a studio collaboration between the Liverani and Walsh who, along with drummer Dario Ciccioni (Genius Rock Opera) and a number of backup vocalists including Billy Greer (Seventh Key, Kansas) and Mike Slamer, set about creating an album with a “new millennium” edge. Liverani takes the musical helm and guides Khymera down the melodic streets already trodden by Journey, Survivor, Hardline and his Genius Rock Opera. “Strike the Lightning”, “Shadows” and “Without Warning” are all up tempo rockers with “Without Warning” being reminiscent of Kansas. It is on this track that Walsh really lets go and proves he is one of the greatest voices in music, past or present. Not only can Khymera rock out, they also show their lighter side on a number of ballads, the strongest of which is probably “Say it With Love”.
Musically there isn’t anything really heavy about this CD. It is more in the vein of Survivor, Harem Scarem, newer Hardline and Journey. At the beginning of this review I listed a number of special songwriters who contributed to this release. Unfortunately, the promo material I was sent didn’t say who contributed which song, the labels website didn’t list the information and Khymera do not have an official website. It would have been interesting to know who contributed which piece of music. On the whole KHYMERA is a strong CD. There are a few too many ballads that drag the flow of the cd down at points but overall this is a fairly strong release which should hopefully introduce Steve Walsh to a new generation of music fans.
