Kiko Loureiro
No Gravity
February 2007
Released: 2006, Locomtive Records/Sound Pollution
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Kiko Loureiro normally plays guitar in the Brazilian act Angra; this is his first instrumental album. On this album, Loureiro plays all of the instruments except drums, which are played by the famous Mike Terrana. The producer is another well-known name: Dennis Ward from Pink Cream 69.

NO GRAVITY is a very varied album where Loureiro shows his ability to play almost every musical style possible. Everything from rock ‘n roll and heavy metal to jazz and latin music are performed, and Loureiro manages to combine all the styles into one album successfully.

The album is 55 minutes long, which is a little too long for an album of this caliber. The material is neatly performed, but it gets a little monotonous without vocals. There’s no question that Loureiro knows what he’s doing, and Terrana manages to keep up the pace with Lourerio’s difficult guitar playing. 13 songs are a little too much for me, since I prefer vocals to guitar playing. NO GRAVITY works best during faster songs like “Enfermo”, “Endangered Species”, “Moment Of Truth”, and “Dilemma” - songs where Loureiro really has the opportunity to show what an excellent guitarist he is.

I’m not and never will be a fan of instrumental albums, and this is no exeption. However, this album has its moments, mainly because of the guitarist’s extreme skills. This is an album for all young up-and-coming guitarists out there.
