Heavy Rock Radio
Released: 2016, Frontiers Records
Jorn Lande has just released his 12th solo album, HEAVY ROCK RADIO. He has been in the business for over 20 years and recently celebrated his birthday, so I decided to go back and review one of his earliest projects, Mundanus Imperium. Feel free to check out that review this month as well.
Mr. Jorn Lande, the undisputed heir to Dio’s throne is known as much for his excellent cover tunes as his superb original material. In fact he has done at least 50 cover tunes in his lengthy career and HEAVY ROCK RADIO is his third full album of cover tunes. The hour long album treats us to 13 versions of tunes and naturally his mascot, the raven, makes another cover appearance on a very appropriate piece of album art, reminiscent of Iron Maiden’s A REAL DEAD ONE.
One of the strengths of what might be yet another simple cover tunes album is the song selection. Instead of opting to cover predictable ‘classics’, Jorn finds a great balance between old favourites, the obscure and newer songs. For example, he does a nice version of Iron Maiden’s ‘The Final Frontier’ a superb choice, a song barely five years old at the time of recording. Under the more obscure realm he does a fine version of a Paul Stanley solo album song which was an inspired choice instead of any one of dozens of Kiss songs he could have tackeld. And in the classic range we get some of his staples, his inspirations, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and yet another Dio song, as he continues on what seems to be his noble quest to single-handedly record the entire catalogue of Dio! His voice is suited to these songs as he makes them his own.
HEAVY ROCK RADIO is great fun and a great introduction to his excellent solo career of original material as well. Jorn makes some of the better covers albums in a sea of covers albums.
