Joe Lynn Turner
Second Hand Life
May 2007
Released: 2007, Frontiers Records/Zink Music
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

This is the tenth solo album by the legendary singer Joe Lynn Turner. Turner describes the album as being a hybrid between his latest solo album THE USUAL SUSPECTS and his recent project album called SUNSTORM. He also felt that his fans maybe wanted to hear more music in the melodic vein.

On SECOND HAND LIFE Turner brings the best of melodic hard rock and 70’s hard rock to life, and in my opinion this is the best solo album Turner has released in a long while. Turner collaborated with songwriters from his Sunstorm project like Jim Peterik (ex- Survivor, Pride of Lions) as well as Bob Held, Karl Cochran, and Martin Briley. There’s also a song featured that Turner co-wrote with Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, and Jim Peterik called “Stroke at Midnight”, which was originally to be featured to the next Deep Purple album when JLT was in the band.

On my promo copy there’s a bonus track for the European market called “Two Lights”. Besides that there are 50 minutes of splendid music on 10 tracks. The entire album is dedicated and blessed with perfect harmonies and high-quality material. Turner sings better than he has in years and his voice bares none of the tiredness from which it sometimes suffers. Some things that Turner could have stayed away from on this album are the ballads and the love theme. Luckily there are only two straight ballads and one up-tempo ballad, and that’s something I can live with.

“Love is Life”, “Second Hand Life” and “Over the Top” are all faster melodic hard rock tunes with heavy and edgy guitar parts played by the brilliant Cochran. “Blood Red Sky” and “Stroke of Midnight” are two retro-70’s hard rock tracks where Turner mixed in some keyboards and strings. The second song has huge similarities with the famous Deep Purple sound. Those can be considered as the highlights of the album. However, Turner and Co. impress me big time on almost every other song as well. This is a remarkable album done by one of the greatest voices of all time. Fans of Turner are, once again, going to worship the ground this man walks on. Let’s hope that a lot of people in Europe buy the album so we can see Joe Lynn Turner on a European stage soon.
