Jeff Scott Soto
Damage Control
April 2012
Released: 2012, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

It’s amazing the think that, dating back to Yngwie Malmsteen’s RISING FORCE album from 1984, Jeff Scott Soto has been kicking ass in heavy metal and hard rock for almost thirty years. He’s had his ups and downs over the years of course, but in my humble opinion, he’s been going from strength to strength recently 2009’s excellent BEAUTIFUL MESS solo album, the incredible W.E.T. project from the same year, and then topping it off with a solid live album in 2010. Now he’s back with DAMAGE CONTROL, his fifth solo studio album, and I’m happy to report that the streak continues!

If you’ve heard any of Soto’s output in the last decade or so, you’ll know exactly what to expect out of this album: pure unadulterated hard rock that isn’t afraid to go heavy on the melodies. No, Soto’s not trying to reinvent himself here and nor does he need to; he’s a master at his chosen genre and knows what he’s doing. So you get the strong hard rockers (title track, “Give a Little More”, “Krazy World”), the mid-paced sing alongs (“Die a Little”) and the ballads (“If I Never Her Go”, Bona Fide”) – it’s all here. Through it all Soto provides his stellar vocals, leading the charge and anchoring the admittedly occasionally sparse songs.

DAMAGE CONTROL isn’t the type of album that will make you see Jeff Scott Soto in a different way, but it’s the perfect type of hard rock album that will please his fans and rock fans in general. Plus, with the warm weather coming early this year, it’s the perfect album to enjoy while you’re out driving around with the windows down. Turn it on, and turn it up!
