Ill Omen
Remnant Spheres of Spiritual Equilibrium
January 2015
Released: Janu, Abyssic Commune
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Some people enjoy their black metal melodic, some atmospheric, and I like it raw on the outsides but with experimentation within. But there are some out there in the global scene who enjoy their black metal slow and incredibly progressive, to the extent that the vocals are almost indecipherable and the instrumentation is up to university education level. By that I refer you to: REMNANT SPHERE OF SPIRITUAL EQUILIBRIUM, the latest EP from Australian one man group Ill Omen.

This is the kind of black metal you’re going to enjoy in the evenings when you have plenty of time to spare. I thought I’d seen all the albums that require a huge time commitment with Dragged Into Sunlight...obviously I was wrong. Ill Omen keeps their droning progression to an 8 minute average, so you’re going to need to really knuckle down for this release – hence why it was limited to only 500 copies in the first place.

But that doesn’t mean the album is bad, it has everything you need from the slow canon of black metal. Plus there are times when the snare drum sounds like a biscuit tin so all you grindcore lovers out there might feel good with this. Whispered vocals and a flow of grimness that’ll make melancholy wash over you is what makes this album worth listening to. A very well paced adventure into the realms of dark fantasy that’ll be suitable for when you’re drinking whisky or lighting up. Stoners won’t be disappointed either. Progressive anguish delivered at its most morose. Slow and painfully pleasing.
