Insult II Injury
February 1998
Released: 1997, Ruffneck Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: EvilG

I2I return on a new label with a new CD. It seems as if there was some sort of falling out between their former label (Century Media) and the band's management. Luckily the band wasn't without a deal for too long as Ruffneck records, from New York, has picked them up.

Their first CD, 1994's Point of This was very promising. For this reason I was really interested in hearing the new CD DRAIN. While DRAIN is respectable, it unfortunately doesn't stand up to Point of This. There seems to be some hardcore/punk elements creeping in over the metal in a few places - most notably on CALAMITY. Maybe this punk/hardcore/metal crossover style is your thing, but as hardcore/metal as I ever get into is Biohazard!! I don't want to scare you off from this CD because it does serve up a number of killer tracks that sound more like left overs from the last CD. This is the case with "SOME KINDA LOVIN" "VIOLATOR" and "CONTROL"...great songs!! As I've said before the strength of this band lies in vocalist JAMES GIBBONS. His ruff yet melodic style sets him above so many other typical vocalists. The second best thing this band has going for it is it's killer sound. The crunch on the guitars is great. Makes you wonder what kind of mix and sound they would get on an even bigger budget?!

I would still recommend this band to fans of metal bands like Biohazard, Flotsam & Jetsam, and Pantera, but I think you should definitely check out Point of This first - you won't be disappointed. If after getting the first one you like it a lot then chances are you'll probably share my opinion on the second one - it's nice to have, but it's not something you'll be playing every day, or as much as the first one.
