Released: 2010, Pulverised Records
I love Swedish Death Metal. The whole early Entombed, Carnage, Dismember etc, etc, etc… scene was totally killer. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, who cares if it is original, as long as it kicks ass. INTO THE CRYPTS OF BLASPHEMY kicks fuckin’ ass! I don’t usually use profanity in my reviews because it seems kinda unprofessional, but Interment just put me in that mood. What a great record.
These guys have actually been around in one form or another for almost 20 years. The band has a bunch of dudes from Centinex and so on and a fairly long history but if ya want a lesson in Swedish Death go buy Ekeroth’s unparalleled book, SWEDISH DEATH METAL. All you really need to know is that if you dig the classic ‘chainsaw’ guitar tone, then this band is for you.
I love it when bands use the classic terminology from the ‘death professions’ (Obituary, Grave, Mortician) and Interment I guess were one of the first to use the name and I’ve glad they have resurrected themselves from beyond the grave. INTO THE CRYPTS OF BLASPHEMY is ultra-brutal. It is a Neanderthal throw back to the exciting times of early Death and they capture the sound and style perfectly. It’s much less polished than the Florida sound. Nasty, brutish and short, the 9 cuts just hit the 30-minute mark with the force of Mike Tyson punch. If there can be such a subtle distinction in guitar tone to be heard, the tone is quite similar to the tone used by Séance on their 1993 album, SALTRUBBED EYES. The album hits you hard, from the opening note it is pretty relentless and merciless.
The band is capitalizing on the recent reissue of their first three demos from the 90’s and have issued one of the best old-school (hate the term) Death metal albums in a long time. 20 years too late but well deserving of any and all praise. Brutal guitars, brutal vocals, brutal everything! Speaking of Ekeroth’s book, his words (p. 363) sum up my thoughts perfectly. “It’s a shame these guys never made it because they are so incredibly good. One of the best Swedish Death metal bands ever. Brutal as fuck”. Buy or die.
