Insision
Terminal Reckoning
March 2016
Released: 2016, Sevared Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team

Say ‘Swedish death metal’ to any well listened group of headbangers, and they will start thinking about melodic riffs, female vocalists and the more commercial acts like Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth. INSISION seem to be enraged against all of those things as they fire this eight track attack in the name of the old school.

For metallers like me, those who love the U.S. sound that was pioneered by Deicide and Cannibal Corpse, this album ticks all the boxes. INSISION have a Chris Barnes style vocalist, they have crunchy, not overly distorted guitars, and take eerie samples from old school horror flicks at many an opportunity. So far, so good. However, great metal isn’t just about ticking boxes, and the five piece give the feeling that they still need to hone their songwriting skills. There are moments on this album which are worth getting excited about, such as the simple but frankly bowel rumbling riff that dominates ‘Shapeshifting’ or the mean chorus and driving, speedy ostinato that make ‘Infected’ a manic stand out track. However, these moments can’t carry all thirty five minutes of this album alone. Furthermore, as the record continues, the old school vibe begins to drift away in favour of more complex chromatic riffs which just fail to impress repeatedly and wipe away the bloody spirit of the band that was so immediate at the start.

On paper, this should be an album that I love, but it lacks the ‘wow’ factor for me. It got me foot tapping, not headbanging, and in a world where quality death metal is in no short supply, it’s very hard to see what could make INCISION stand out. Download ‘Infected’ for your iPod, don’t bother with the full CD.
