Ice War
Battle Zone
December 2015
Released: 2015, Iron Bonehead Productions
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Erich

Ice War is really a one-man band in Jo Capitalicide. BATTLE ZONE is an EP rooted in “ancient heavy metal classicism”, namely NWOBHM. Clocking in at only 2 tracks, it is pretty easy to absorb Capitalicide’s commitment to old school, from production to arrangement. These DIY efforts often go unheard or unheralded. Fortunately, that was not the case for me and BATTLE ZONE.

BATTLE ZONE is an EP that really is for the pure NWOBHM enthusiast though, as the album has been written and performed as if over 30 years of metal evolution never occurred. What you get are classic gallops, a chugging mid-pace and vocals that are clearly devoted to inducing the punters to purchase another pint. The title track features said gallops along with choice melodic riffs. “This Was Our Home” picks up the pace a bit, a blend of punk and metal.

BATTLE ZONE is nice snippet that sets the stage for a full-length at some point in the future. It’s not perfect, and it is not designed to be. The retro-production is not likely to win over any converts from the younger generation, but if you are neck wrecker of a certain age this could be a welcome return to glory days.
