Insision
BENEATH THE FOLDS OF FLESH
July 2002
Released: 2002, Earache Records
Rating: 3.7/5
Reviewer: Night of the Realm

When I mention the term Swedish death metal, the majority of readers would automatically think of such “melodic-death” bands as Dark Tranquility, old In Flames, and other such bands that are not truly death metal. On their debut album, Insision break the stereotype that Swedish = Melodic with this release of true, brutal death metal.

Insision was formed in 1997 as a four piece and cut their first demo in 1998. One MCD, another demo, and a split 10” EP later, plus the addition of a second guitarist brings Insision to 2002 and their debut album. BENEATH THE FOLDS OF FLESH is 9 tracks of furious death metal, clocking in at a total length of just under 30 minutes. While this CD may lack in quantity, there is no lack of quality, as every song on this disc is good. The sound is typical of the brutal death style; one can definitely hear in this band the influences of the favourite bands of Insision’s members: Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, and Morbid Angel. The musicianship on this album really stands out on this technical death metal album. Lyrically, the band draws on various mythologies for inspiration, as well as Lovecraftian themes and some of the usual black-death blasphemies. My only complaint here is the short length of the album. Overall, BENEATH THE FOLDS OF FLESH is a good start for this young Swedish band. Insision may not be smashing any boundaries within the death metal realm, but they are a band to watch, shattering the mold of Swedish death metal.
