Insidious Decrepancy
The Inerrancy of Profanation
January 2006
Released: 2005, Unmatched Brutality Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Pataklysm

He's back… Shawn Whitaker, the one man massacre known as blasphemous brutal death act, Insidious Decrepancy! Doing the guitars, bass, vocals and drum programming, Whitaker is one talented son of a gun! This being Insidious Decrepancy’s second album, Whitaker shows a little less technicality on THE INERRANCY OF PROFANATION compared to his debut, 2002’s DECADENT ORGY OF ATROCIOUS SUFFERING. Don't get me wrong, though, if you liked the debut, you will like this one, too.

Insidious Decrepancy plays brutal death, filled with twists and turns, blastbeats and breakdowns, slams, and guttural vocals that we all love…or hate?!? Whitaker's vocals vary on this album, as he does some insanely low barking gutturals a la John Gallagher (Dying Fetus) and some great shrieking highs sounding like early Glen Benton. The guitar work is top notch and his brand of technical insanity is exactly what I look for when I listen to death metal. His slower breakdown riffs are absolutely crushing! I looked up while on the bus and realized everyone was staring at me while I was headbanging profusely to this album. I guess a good comparison to describe Insidious Decrepancy would be Dying Fetus meets Putrid Pile, with a little Devourment and Deeds of Flesh thrown in.

The song titles on THE INERRANCY OF PROFANATION are ridiculously long and ridden with big, intellectual words (who said death metal wasn't educational?) For example, the second track, "Surreptitious Misanthropy Voraciously Consuming Rationality Thus Invoking Dormant Sociopathic Desirest", leads me to think to myself, “Does this guy even know what this means?” All of the lyrics are written by William Hutchings, a friend of Whitaker’s, and don't quite match the intelligent sounding song titles. They are rooted mostly in blasphemy, gore-filled killing and debauchery. The cover art, courtesy of Jon Zig, definitely isn't for everybody (don't show your mother!), showing a blood-covered Jesus anally impaled on an inverted cross.

Insidious Decrepancy are on Unmatched Brutality Records home to such brutal acts as Brodequin, Inveracity, and Retch. If you are a fan of technical brutal death metal, I would highly recommend THE INERRANCY OF PROFANATION. It is amazing to hear what just one man is capable of!

THE INERRANCY OF PROFANATION, what can I say about this CD that you haven’t seen on the cover already. Yes, it is Death Metal, Brutal Death Metal to be exact. Yes, it sounds like a bastard son of Suffocation. Yes, it is not as good as the New Yorkers. But what you don’t know is that THE INERRANCY OF PROFANATION doesn’t come from a band. It comes for a man: Shawn Whitaker. One sick man.

Unfortunately THE INERRANCY OF PROFANATION is not an interesting release. It has some moments here and there, and also some killer riffs (check out the middle part of “Befouldind the Adoration of Christ”), but the song structures are poor. They just sound like a bunch of riffs thrown in a pot just because the mastermind behind the band had too much riffs lying around.

Also, a very negative aspect are the drums. They sound awful, and as you may have guessed they come from a drum machine. The sound is extremely artificial and the cymbals, hi-hats and every other crash annoyed me right from the beginning. I am sure that if Shawn Whitaker had bought a better drum machine, or maybe a drum software, like the incredible Reason, things would have sounded better. Bass is also pretty hard to listen too.

On this one I don’t have anything more to say. Still, I can see many Brutal Death lovers finding some meat here. But for everyone else this won’t mean a thing. Hopefully the next release is more interesting and is not the shadow, of the shadow of the shadow of the shadow of Suffocation and the likes. Stay Heavy!!!
