Peruvian Death Metal duo INFECTION unleash quite the gory Death Metal attack on Acrotomophile Mutilator, their second full length release. Their music mixes things learned from early CANNIBAL CORPSE, BROKEN HOPE and old school stuff like SKELETAL EARTH. There's a Thrash Metal influence alongside some more melodic stuff in the throat-ripping guitar riffs that define the band's sound. I should point out that the band is very adept at playing technical stuff, especially when you consider it's just two people in the band. Drums are digitally created, yet the production manages to mask that fact, making the drums sound as real as possible. Another interesting fact is that the lyrics are sung in Spanish, while the song titles are in English. Hey, if CORRUPTED, the Japanese Doom Metal band, have song titles in Spanish, and German Crust band ACCION MUTANTE sing in English, then why not?
As with many albums of this ilk, the best way to appreciate INFECTION's Acrotomophile Mutilator is to listen to the entire record. It's a full on attack on the listener. While the band infuses a lot of stuff into these songs, some of the ideas start sounding a little bit similar after the first few tracks. "Regurgitating Human Parts" is one of the catchiest of the bunch with it's mid paced tempo in the verses. Another example of a good slow tempo song (for this band at least) would be album closer "Worse Than Being Dead" in which the band add some odd time signatures. The title track has one mean guitar riff that will certainly get listeners' attention. The rest of the album sort of follows an established formula that, nonetheless, works because the songs are three minute blasts of fury. As mentioned above, by listening to the record from start to finish, you will find yourself suddenly surprised at some of the stuff that these two guys did.
INFECTION have crafted a great Death Metal album here which eschews some of the expected modern stuff in favor of the aggression that most Death Metal fans yearn for. Again, INFECTION being comprised of two members is impressive in that the band sounds massive. There are pretty good ideas here in terms of guitar riffs. These guys most likely put everything they had here, since INFECTION sounds like the work of at least four musicians, but instead is the work of two great musicians.
