Infectious Grooves / Cyco Miko
Funk It Up & Punk It Up: Live In France '95
July 2010
Released: 2010, Suicidal Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Robert Williams

FUNK IT UP & PUNK IT UP: LIVE IN FRANCE '95 is a two-disc live retrospective featuring performances from both Cyco Miko and Infectious Grooves, both fronted by Suicidal Tendencies vocalist Mike Muir. The recording is taken from a performance by both bands in Lyon, France and documented by soundman Tom Abraham straight from the soundboard to a DAT recorder.

Cyco Miko is best described as hardcore influenced skater punk, pretty similar to early Suicidal Tendencies, actually. "Cyco Miko Wants You" has a catchy beat, but an over repetitive chorus kills any momentum. "All I Ever Get" has a really cool So-Cal punker vibe with it's gang shout background vocals and three chord guitar progressions. "All Kinda Crazy" builds between mosh heavy breakdowns and skank beats in a formula that has seemingly been forgotten by the hardcore bands of today.

On the second disc of FUNK IT UP & PUNK IT UP: LIVE IN FRANCE '95 the listener is treated to the full set of Infectious Grooves. Mike Muir and his band had apparently performed double duty every night on this European tour and judging from the crowd response, this particular performance was recorded at a very large venue. "Sarsippius Intro" displays Muir's comedic street comedy before busting into the funky booty shakin riffage found on "Popcorn". On tracks like "Turtle Wax" I really get taken back to that nostalgic initial WTF feeling of discovering Muir's other musical leanings in Infectious Grooves. It was hard back then to imagine Cyco Miko fronting a funk metal band, just as it's kind of strange now, I suppose. If you've never heard Infectious Grooves, in a nutshell they are a very, bouncy bottom-end heavy jam band as demonstrated as such numbers as "Boom Boom Boom" and "Rules Go Out The Window", with over emphasis on the usage of the wah-wah pedal and jazz chords.

If you are a die-hard Mike Muir fan, this live release might find itself a happy home amongst your CD collection. If your not that familiar with Cyco Miko, I'd recommend instead checking out his work in his main band Suicidal Tendencies first, then proceeding along to stuff like Infectious Grooves at your own risk, as I think the material on disc two is a painful reminder of why the early to mid-nineties really sucked.
