Impaled Nazarene
All That You Fear
April 2004
Released: 2003, Osmose
Rating: 4.8/5
Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland

The Finnish legends are back with their 8th release, ALL THAT YOU FEAR. This is yet another satisfying slab of blackened thrash metal from Impaled Nazarene and with new guitarist Tuomio in the fold, this album is essential listening. Once again, the subject of boozing, religion and brutality are popular subject matter. They seem to have dispelled with the more melodic approach taken on their last few records but still keep the music listenable. The production (courtesy of Anssi Kippo and the band) is also top-notch. The black metal elitists will have a thousand complaints about this, but DAMN it sounds good!

“Armageddon Death Squad” is easily one of the best metal tracks of the year. There are some killer riffs here from Tuomio and Onraj 9mm and Slutifer barks out some vicious lyrics. “Curse of the Dead Medusa” and “Halo of Flies” are other standout tracks that build upon the band’s harsher-sounding black metal past. There is little melody to be found and the blastbeats are delivered fast and furious. “Urgent Need To Kill” begins with a faster-than-a-speeding-bullet riff that should get the crowd moving during the live shows, too. The band is not afraid to slow things down to mid-tempo, either. “The Endless War” is full of melodies but is just as punishing as the rest of the tracks. “Suffer In Silence” is a fitting tribute to their fallen brother, Somnium, who passed away in 2003 in a bizarre drunken fall. The lyrics are biting but express the pain and anguish that the band obviously felt.

Impaled Nazarene succeeds where so many others have failed by being flexible (and talented) enough to bridge the genres of black, death and thrash. ALL THAT YOU FEAR is one of their strongest releases yet and should be among the top releases of the year.
