Live At Wacken-The Seventh Date Of Blashyrkh (DVD)
Released: 2010, Nuclear Blast Records
Immortal has to date released only one DVD, if you don’t count that bonus DVD on the reissue of SONS OF NORTHERN DARKNESS or that obscure two-song promo video thing they did way back in ’05. LIVE AT WACKEN in my mind anyway, stands as the only ‘true’ Immortal DVD to date and it captures the band at arguably at the height of their power.
As a DVD, the production and presentation is adequate. It is simply an hour and ten minute show documenting their headlining appearance at Wacken on August 4th in 2007. There is an eight-page booklet consisting of four photos and a few credits. The DVD does come with a live CD of the concert which is kinda cool because they have never released a live album. I would have preferred for them to have released the concert as a stand-alone live CD. There are no extras, no bonus features, and the layout and design are quite plain and simple. It almost seems like a contractual obligation scenario, with minimal effort put into the DVD.
There is something vaguely…incorrect…about a Black Metal band playing at the world’s biggest Metal festival. I’ve got some DVD’s with various Black Metal bands playing in some crappy, small club somewhere in Europe and on some grubby level, it works. On LIVE AT WACKEN it just seems somewhat odd to see the band with fireworks, smoke and fog, a giant backdrop, a huge multi-coloured lightshow and long sweeping crowd shots more akin to a Manowar DVD than an Immortal DVD. I suppose what I’m trying to say is the production is superb, as is most of Nuclear Blast stuff, but it seems out of place. The band has a commanding presence but seemed small on the massive stage in front of tens of thousands. The band rip through 11 songs with minimal stage banter or interaction with each other…they just put their heads down and slay, even if the crowd are waving flags and tossing around balloon soccer balls!
In the final analysis, LIVE AT WACKEN:THE SEVENTH DATE OF BLASHYRKH is bare bones and an adequate, caught in that middle ground where they fall victim of not enough and too much at the same time. Immortal fans will need this as the only good representation (to date) of the band in live setting but the DVD is tempered by being too produced, too large and perhaps eliminating some of the mystique surrounding the band by capturing them in a glossy setting that is perhaps not their natural environment. Good but not great.
