I Am I
Event Horizon
July 2012
Released: 2012, Indie
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

I'm sure quite a few people are curious about this album. In March of 2010, it was announced that Dragonforce and their longtime singer ZP Theart had parted ways. Many fans and observers were quite shocked that the band at the height of their power had lost a crucial component. There wasn't any mudslinging to the best of my knowledge so I doubt we will ever know if he quit or was fired, but it doesn't really matter. Two years down the road both parties regrouped and have issued new albums so that is your history lesson.

EVENT HORIZON is the debut album of the band I AM I, fronted by Theart. First of, I'm not thrilled with the band name. I'm sure it is quite appropriate and meaningful to Theart who has come out of the shadow of his former band, but the name just doesn't scream 'Metal!' nor does it have staying power or marquee value. It's just too plain and too close to the name of other heavy acts like Who I Am, As I Am, the prog band, I Am and simply 'I'.

I can easily overlook the band name as EVENT HORIZON as could be predicted is significantly different than his previous act. Don't get me wrong, it's fast and heavy but not Dragonforce fast. I was very surprised to see a strong element of classy Melodic British Metal acts like Ten or even Whitesnake. Keyboards play a significant role in filling out the bands sound. The ten song album is just loaded with melody and soaring vocal harmonies. The lyrics are generally uplifting and positive. Along for the ride are a trio of lesser known musicians but all of them are very competent and talented. Drummer Clark doesn't play fast all the time but can get the double-kick speed up when necessary. Guitarist Jacob Ziemba has some great solos and also shreds in spots, but of course that is not his role and likely that the last thing Theart wants is another shredder! But still Jacob can play and the guitar works compliments the keyboard nicely. There are a few progressive elements as well, evident more in the performances than song structure, but the songs are interesting, a step above 4/4 time, verse chorus repetition. Having said that, the choruses are strong and it is here that Theart shows he has quite a dynamic range, not just high notes all the time. The vocal melodies are very engaging.

In industry terms I think the Dragonforce/Theart split hurt both parties. Theart scales back to an indie and and release the album digitally and Dragonforce sold significantly fewer copies than their last album. However artistically speaking, both bands put out great records and the fans win in the end. ZP Theart and I Am I stand tall and deliver the masses a strong statement of intent, a new direction and EVENT HORIZON is an album that will appeal to a broad spectrum of Melodic Metal fans.
