"The Future, Written in the Past"
March 1999
Released: 1999, Independent
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: EvilG

Rating: 2.5/5 (For the Overall CD)

Rating: 4/5 (For the songs that sound like Motorhead!!)

Hammerhawk....Hammerwho I'm sure you're saying...unless you're from the Netherlands you probably haven't heard these guys. The band formed way back in 1981 and have since had many many personnel changes and have released several demos but this is only their second CD. "The Future, Written In The Past" has songs from their first release, demos from 1981, songs from the CD "Welcome Home, We Expected You" and some rare and unreleased tracks.

This CD contains 19 tracks and is 74minutes long! Hammerhawk sound like they are influenced primarily by Motorhead. This is even more evident with their older material. I'm not sure how seriously anyone would take them though considering they have song titles like "F**k To Kill" and "Blow up Doll." Yes it's do as a B-side as a joke! As well their webpage talks about them touring with The Mentors, another joke band. If they want to be taken seriously (at least by me) loose the silly song titles, and get back to your roots, the older songs on this compilation are the better ones.

The CD does have some shining moments such as their cover of Kiss's "God of Thunder", "Little Mean Killing Machine" (a few nice guitar harmony parts), "Raping The Future" (nice intro, then it kind of winds down)..Then There is "All of the Days", "Dead or Alive" and "Hammerhawk" about your classic Motorhead!!. In fact Hammerhawk are at their best when they sound like Motorhead! Most of the songs that stood out to me on this CD were ones that reminded me of if you like old Motorhead, do yourself a favor and pick this CD up, I know you'll have fun listening to it.
