Hammer Fight
Hammer Fight (EP)
August 2012
Released: 2011, HPGD Productions
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

If you’re on a Friday night bender and looking for an appropriate soundtrack to compliment the ensuing debauchery, Hammer Fight’s self-titled EP is probably a good place to start. The New Jersey quartet live somewhere between Motorhead, AC/DC, and Municipal Waste, which basically means some high octane, 100 proof thrash n’ roll.

The six original tunes (and one AC/DC cover) are all upbeat, energetic thrashers that showcase the band’s knack for writing catchy tunes in a heavy context. Reading the song titles, you get the sense that the boys like to party, but there’s plenty of substance to the songs themselves. Rob Guidotti rips some fantastic lead guitar work across theEP, particularly on “Stuck in the Chamber” and “Tears of Unfathomable Sadness” (the one quasi-serious track on the disc). And Drew Murphy bears a vocal resemblance to some bastard child of Lemmy and Sheer Terror’s Paul Bearer, with a whisky soaked bark that ably presides over the party. With each track clocking in at around the 2-minute mark or below, the EP has a hit and run feel to it, which works as an introduction to Hammer Fight. It’s also a drawback, because the songs are promising, you want to hear more, and then it’s over.

But it’s a good time. Metal bands can often take themselves too seriously, but listening to the 7 tracks on the EP, I don’t think this is a problem that Hammer Fight has to worry about. Released late last year by the good folks at HPGD Productions, the HAMMER FIGHT EP is available for purchase via the label website. Check it out as well as Hammer Fight’s website for samples.
