Hull
Sole Lord
May 2009
Released: 2009, The End Records Rating: 3.5/5 Reviewer: Bruce Sanchez Hull is a five-piece based out of Brooklyn, New York. SOLE LORD is their debut. And dang does it kick ass. SL is an organic mixture of down tuned, sludgy, stoner metal. Culling a sound in the tradition of Neurosis, Mastodon, and High on Fire, they pound through ten tracks of heaviness. Hull is still unique, however. They introduce some of the cleanest guitar tones found in the genre and combine them with crisp and singing licks. Then, without notice, the rest of the band joins in with metered crashes of thunder. There are mini-jams and there are constructed bits, all working to create a bottom heavy album of doom. Hull boasts three guitar players, and to be honest, it doesn’t sound like it on the album. It’s all very traditional two-guitar work. Live, however, I’m sure the line-up is an impressive display of tonal strength. This album fucks shit up. Buy it. ![]()
