Holochaust
Valley of Misery
August 2001
Released: 2001, Independent
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Pete

These guys must have listened to a lot of old school bay-area metal, as these influences are evident in the three tracks that make up VALLEY OF MISERY. Formed in '97,VALLEY OF MISERY is the second 'demo' from this Finnish quartet.

The first track 'Beyond The Violence' has a Testament/old school vibe to it, laced with Lemmy-like vocals from Tommi Tiihonen. Next up is the title track, "Valley of Misery" probably the strongest cut of the three found here. Tiihonen sounds eerily like James Hetfield on this track...hell it's a Metallica blueprint right down to the wah-pedal guitar solo from Risto Kivioja. Sounding like a cross between "Fade to Black' and "Until it Sleeps', it's pretty obvious who their biggest influence is. Closing out the CD is "I Wanna Lie" sounding a lot like, you guessed it, Metallica. Now I'm not bashing these guys, as it's alright to show your influence, but it doesn't have to be so obvious. But you know what.....this demo is pretty damn good. Thoroughly enjoyed it. In a nutshell, Finland's Holochaust have some work ahead of 'em yet, but their moving in the right direction.
