Hirax
Immortal Legacy
April 2014
Released: 2014, SPV/Steamhammer
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

For a band with more than 20 years of history, but a mere four previous full-length albums to their credit, California thrashers Hirax keep themselves incredibly busy. Since reforming in 1997, the band has released nigh-on innumerable EPs, splits, singles, DVDs, and live albums. As always though, it’s the full albums that truly count, and Katon W. de Pena has assembled his crew for album number five, their first since the mixed reaction afforded 2009’s EL ROSTRO DE LA MUERTE.

Right from the iconic-looking Philip Lawvere cover art, it’s clear that Hirax mean business with IMMORTAL LEGACY. Far from backing away from their past, lead track “Black Smoke” belches forth with the furious thrash attack the band is known for, led by de Pena’s Blitz Ellsworth-like acquired taste vocals. The message is obvious: We Are Here To Thrash! No joke, thrash fans can stop reading now and just go buy the album; done & done. For those of you that need more convincing, witness the galloping riffs of “Victims of the Dead”, the thunderous grooves “Tied to the Gallows Pole”, and the downright vicious “Violence of Action”. Song after song is just pure delicious thrash. Hell, the band even takes a page from early Metallica and includes a stirring bass solo (“Atlantis”).

There are a few minor quibbles such as fluff tracks (“S.O.W.”), and de Pena’s strained vocals on “Deceiver”, but by the end of “The World Will Burn”, Hirax leaves no doubt that this is a brilliant thrash album that will have your fist flying and head banging. Buy with confidence.

Hirax
Immortal Legacy
April 2014
Released: 2004, Steamhammer
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Helias Papadopoulos

I am always happy when a classic (crossover) thrash band is back with a new album release and Hirax is one of them. IMMORTAL LEGACY is their new effort and I am surely sure that many thrash fans will stop underrating them.

This is the fifth raging thrash device by the American legendary thrash metal act and shows off some pretty nice work from these guys. IMMORTAL LEGACY contains probably ‘immortal’ thrash metal tracks like ‘Hellion Rising’, ‘Black Smoke’ and the mid-tempo rhythmical ‘Thunder Roar, The Conquest, La Boca De La Bestia - The Mouth of the Beast’. There are tracks that strongly bear to mind N.W.O.B.H.M. like ‘Tied To The Gallows Pole’. I always enjoy instrumental tracks when there are on metal albums and here we have a couple, ‘S.O.W.’ and a bass solo in ‘Atlantis (Journey To Atlantis)’.

Someone is going to ask if this Hirax release worths something? The answer is simple: YES! Because, this album consists of huge and expansive, as well as some riffs so heavy that they would cave your skull in if you sat near the speakers.

Hirax return with IMMORTAL LEGACY, their best and most vicious album since their reunion. A blistering display of thrash metal, IMMORTAL LEGACY is nothing short of a full-scale thrashing assault. With a relentless vocal onslaught by Katon W. De Pena, bulldozer-heavy riffs that swarm the listener, and close-to-inhuman drumming, the album beats you into submission over its 13-track length (including the bonus track Mephistopheles).

IMMORTAL LEGACY is a synthesis of everything great about thrash metal distilled into what will arguably be one of the genre’s best albums of 2014
