Hellish Outcast
Your God Will Bleed
May 2012
Released: 2012, Independent
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Death-infused (deathly? Death-like?) thrash metal is a realm that few bands can pull off convincingly; indeed even heavyweights of the subgenre like Nocturnal Fear occasionally struggle to make an entire album of top-tier songs. This is essentially my way of introducing Bergen, Norway’s Hellish Outcast. The band has been kicking around since 2001 (!), but has only a demo and an EP to their name previous to this. The band definitely plays in the death/thrash zone, which is damn invigorating when done right, so it was with some interest that I came to YOUR GOD WILL BLEED.

The band wastes no time in putting a boot to your head with the opening salvo of “The View, So Disgusting”. The song’s thunderous double bass assault is actually more death than thrash, and it wastes no time in setting the tone for what’s to come. “Djinn (Iblis)” is one of the faster songs and its more thrashy riffs make it a bit more memorable than some of the stock death metal riffs that pollute some of the other songs on the album.

Aside from Thebon’s one-dimensional shouting vocals, the standard aggro riffs the band uses are the biggest albatross around their neck. I mean, there is no doubt the band can play (after being at it for a decade I would hope so!), but their song writing skills are still a bit behind the leaders. Seriously, when they go into the extended breakdown sequences (see “Muffled Screams”), I tune out completely. There are definitely some good thrashy moments scattered throughout the album, but I’m not sure Hellish Outcast offers enough to recommend them over their peers. That said, if you’re into this style, they are certainly worth checking out.
