Memories in Black
July 2007
Released: 2007, Black Lodge/Sound Pollution
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Hellfueled is about to unleash their third studio album. After the last album BORN II ROCK from 2005 the band did quite a lot of touring both in Scandinavia and Europe. This spring the band opened for Saxon on parts of their tour. The recording sessions for the album started in November/December last year in the famous Studio Fredman with the notorious Fredrik Nordström as producer.

Hellfueled continues to deliver heavy metal/hardrock with complex tempo changes of various speed. Something these Swedes probably have heard too many times are how alike singer Andy Alkman is with Ozzy when it comes to the lead vocals as well as lead guitar Jocke’s similarities with Zakk Wylde when it comes to the guitar play. And the similarities with the mentioned legends are something that has stayed put on this album.

Despite the similarities Hellfueled has taken on a little different musical approach this time. I think MEMORIES IN BLACK feels a little more 70’s retro hardrock this time and the 80’s metal has been mixed heavier with stoner rock. But they have still managed to keep what defines Hellfueled, the ass-kicking songs and the great material. My personal favorite songs are “Rewinding Time”, “Sky Walker”, “Warzone”, and Face Your Demon” and “Down”. All of those songs are heavy 80’s metal combined with a heavy riffing Jocke Lundgren who’s sailed up on the guitar heaven here in Sweden. Some of the songs are definitely going to become my favorite live songs. The rhythm section feels as strong as ever and the band can rest solidly on the bass and drum play.

Unfortunately this album is a little uneven when it comes to the material, “Monster” is a fast and heavy metal track that’s totally destroyed by disco drums. And the ballad “Again” is a sad piece that the guys could have got rid off. One of the most positive things with MEMORIES IN BLACK is Alkman’s lead vocals, he shows that he’s more than an Ozzy clone and he uses more of his vocal range here than what he did on previous albums.

Even if this album is a strong deliverance I can’t but helping liking the previous albums a little more. It felt like the band had something fresh to offer us with those albums, this one is strong yes, but there’s something missing and I can’t really tell what it is. It’s OK to look at other acts/people to get inspiration but to once again create an album that sounds a lot like Ozzy?, well, I don’t know.. The guys are all skilled musicians and a hell of a live act but I had hoped for a little more with this third album.
