The Power of Rock and Roll
September 2007
Released: 2007, EMI
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

Vollmer does it again and shows the world that he is never gonna stop rockin’. After over 30 years in the industry Brian and Helix have had many ups and downs and he is on the upswing again. This disc is chock full of 10 new originals as well as a remake of their early 80’s smash “Heavy Metal Love”. Some of these tracks were released last fall on the GET UP! E.P. (which is now out of print). This disc also is the first release of original material on E.M.I. in many years.

Starting off with a bang is the track “Fill Your Head With Rock” which was written as the theme song for this years Sweden Rock Festival. It is a classic sounding heavy rocker with some great guitar and amazing drumming. Brian has Steve Georgakopoulos on guitar and drummer extraordinaire Rob MacEachern playing on the cd as well as former bassist Jeff “Stan” Fountain. The live Helix band is Brent “Ned” Neimi, Rick Van Dyk, Jim Lawson, Paul Fonseca. While the live and studio bands differ both are great and the live band plays the songs flawlessly and with emotion and feel. The songs contained here emits the live feel that is essential to a band like Helix who’s live shows are second to none. You could almost swear that they were recorded live in studio in places. The energy of Brian’s voice is captured on disc here for the first time in several years and it shows that playing the songs live will be a breeze and no trickery or backing tapes needed. This release can be easily compared to earlier Helix classics like NO REST FOR THE WICKED. There is some rawness and heaviness coming back into his music which is good to see. In a couple instances you get the excitement you first felt when hearing Kiss back in the 70’s or the G n’ R debut. This is good ‘ol classic heavy rock n’ roll.

Helix is back in full swing with a solid disc of material that will kick your ass and definitely fill your head with rock while causing you to need earplugs because you will be cranking this while cruising down the highway.
