Heaven's Fire
Judgement Day
November 2014
Released: 2014, Indie
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Back in the 80’s Toronto Canada was a little hotbed of Melodic Metal with a scene that almost rivaled that of Los Angeles. In fact, for a while TO was called L.A. North! While times have changed I think these deep melodic Metal roots have always existed in TO all through the 90’s with bands like Harem Scarem, into the new millennium with bands like Emerald Rain, unheard of in Canada, but big elsewhere. Heaven’s Fire put out one album on the respected /Now & Then label back in 2000. They have now returned with a barn-burner of a Melodic Metal album, JUDGEMENT DAY.

Technically this album was issued as an independent record in 2013 but now has been reissued again, remastered and with alternate art. The new album art is quite similar to the flaming angel mascot of Axenstar or the cover of the last Stratovarious album, NEMESIS, but ya can’t really go wrong with a naked flaming angel chick on your album cover.

Mainman JT Harris teamed up with a couple of the old Harem Scarem dudes and the album is just killer. It is a very nice mix ranging from (almost) Power Metal to more melodic anthemic styles. This album has it all. Fast, powerful songs like the lead of cut’ Screamin’, gorgeous ballads like ‘Just For Tonight’ and massive big choruses sing-along cuts like ‘Big Stage’. This could have been a monster hit 20 years ago and in my mind it is! There is an instrumental shred piece, ‘187’ where JT gets to show his impressive chops and style. Vocalist, Darren Smith , who is usually known for his drumming has some nice grit in his fiery delivery that could give Jeff Scott Soto a run for his money. The production is great, possessing a nice full rock sound.

I’m so pleased that there are still great bands like Heaven’s Fire who fight through adversity, come back swinging and make killer melodic Metal. JUDGEMENT DAY is a strong contender for the Melodic Hard Rock/Metal album of the year.
