Heaven's Fire
Playing With Fire
December 2017
Released: 2017, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Canadian Carnage! Because I am a true patriot, once or twice a year I like to do a quick spotlight and some short reviews on newer, independent, underground Canadian Metal bands. That time is now! Thanks to all of the bands who sent me material for my spotlight. In the spirit of the PMRC, I have chosen a ‘Filthy Fifteen’ (+1!) as some (but not all!) of the bright lights, innovators and leaders of Canadian Metal. Most of them are independent bands releasing their debut album or EP in 2017. Check these bands out, they are the future of Metal! They are (listed alphabetically)…

Abomb (Calgary)

Decatur (Toronto)

Emblem (St. John’s)

Evereal (Mission)

Hammerdrone (Calgary)

Heaven’s Fire (Toronto)

Hounskull (Mississauga)

Ice War (Ottawa)

Maglor (Calgary)

Monarch Woods (London)

Operus (Toronto)

Osyron (Calgary)

Solarus (London)

The Lightbringer (Quebec City)

To The Mountains (Lethbridge)

Votov (Winnipeg)

Heaven’s Fire are back! They have just released their third full-length studio album, PLAYING WITH FIRE. These guys probably don’t truly belong in my Canadian Carnage feature as they are probably the long-running and signed to the biggest label (Frontiers) and they are probably the most melodic, but they are Canadian and they belong!

Their third effort is a monster 13 songs running almost 70-minutes, there is good value here! They keep in tradition with their angel mascot intact for the album art and a great loud 80’s production style. Heaven’s Fire play a smooth and classic Melodic Metal sound, big guitars, big gang vocals, big choruses and big fun! Some people might lump them into ‘glam’ but that would be unfair as they are a bit and faster, think heavier Dokken or Pretty Maids as compared to Poison or Warrant. PLAYING WITH FIRE has it all fast rockers, lush ballads, hints of keyboards, some longer more progressive songs, and a professional style that can easily put them in the big leagues of this style. It is no wonder they got signed to Frontiers as they join Canadian label mates, Harem Scarem. Speaking of Harem Scarem, former Harem Scarem drummer Darren Smith is no longer the vocalist of Heaven's Fire but has been ably replaced by Rafael Bennet.

There are many great bands like this in Canada (like Von Groove, Emerald Rain and more) that get little to no recognition at home. It’s a shame but I’m also glad that bands like Heaven’s Fire keep this classic sound alive.
