Hatetrend is – once again, one of those new Metal bands crawling out from the depths of the Finnish underground scene that I have never heard a thing of before. The band has been around since 2002, recording a sackful of demos and EPs prior to their 1st full-length studio album, VIOLATED, that has now been unleashed via a small independent label, Violent Journey Records.

Hatetrend´s 10-track offering introduces a band that sounds modern, grooving and has elements from Metalcore, Thrash and Death Metal – and that tries to find a free lane on the vast highway of most accepted, major Metal trends for their type of aggressive and extreme Metal.

Well, partly they even succeed in that – yes, I openly admit that. There´s a fair amount of attempt from the band members to take a road which ain´t that straight at all as one could think of in the first place, and it gets even more bumpy and rough to wander through the more one allows them to pierce through your skin. In that sense, they do reach all that there is to be reached for; some levels of originality and uniqueness are important factors to be reckoned within their groovy and extreme Metal compositions, so it´s definitely a positive thing to see the band getting them accomplished.

Then again, frankly I also think that at times they try to sound way too complicated and tricky at the expense of having a more original approach to their stuff, which sadly cuts out some of the power and heaviness out from their songs. They should also skip totally all those relatively annoying clean vocal parts in my opinion, as it seems to become some sort of trend in today´s Metal world; to use them in extreme Metal music and hoping them to add some extra contrast to the sound. Besides if you intend to record some clean vocal parts into your songs, then make sure you do them properly enough. Hatetrend has a failed attempt in that department, unfortunately.

There´s both something good and something not ´that good´ on Hatetrend´s debut album. But in all honesty they still do have a long way to go in order to impress and convince not only me, but also a bunch of other old-school Metal loving farts who secretly would have hoped for a total regression of Metal music in general before the 80s turned to the 90s.
