Game Over
Nintnedo Metal
May 2003
Released: 2002, Indie
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

As many of the regular readers will know I really enjoy discovering the obscure anomalies in the metal world. It is these little experiments that are the spice of life and Nintendo Metal is no exception. This is a five-song indie demo from a Swedish three-piece. As you might guess the band have taken the core riffs and musical elements from some Nintendo video games and metalized them! What a cool concept!

The packaging is quite good with a picture of Mario looking like a bit Rob Halford. The package has full lyrics, acknowledgments and a little description of what the concept behind Nintendo Metal. It is important to note that this is not merely duplication of simplistic game tunes. These are adaptations, interpretations with full lyrics and so on.

The leader of the band is Elisabeth ‘Wire McQuaid’ Pezovanis who plays guitar, bass, keys who basically spearheads the project writing and arranging. What a unique idea, I’m very impressed. Musically, the songs are solid metal in the traditional Judas Priest/Iron Maiden vein. Not too flashy or over-indulgent and perhaps even a little pedestrian. The production is pretty decent as well. I would have liked real drums however to flesh out the sound.

I found the drawback for me personally is, I don’t really play video games, so I did not recognize four of the five tunes! The band provides a great solution however. You can visit the web-site at, download the originals and compare! The website is really cool. For you guys who are gamers the games that get adapted are Castlevania, Gemlins, Megaman, Punch Out and of course Mario Bros.

I think it would be really cool for this project to be taken to the next level with full label support, but until then check out this quirky little gem.
