Greg Rapaport
Homunculus
August 2006
Released: 2006, Splinterhead Productions
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: MetalChick

Anytime a musician takes on a solo project that’s truly solo – in other words, he does everything on his own – I have to admire that dedication and drive to be behind every piece of such a creation. Greg Rapaport has released his fourth instrumental album all on his own, and offers up some unique concoctions of progressive metal and jazz fusion, with imaginative themes.

The goal with HOMUNCULUS was to musically explore different facets of the human personality. Rapaport accomplishes this with his progressive songwriting skills. For example, in "The Brawler (Affliction)," he puts together heavy riffs and technical arpeggios with off time beats to represent the feelings that the song title suggests. He does it best, though, in "The Assassin (Guilt)," where the awesome shredding meets the soft and sad acoustic moments that portray the conflict of emotions.

There’s a lot to digest on this album. He jumps back and forth between the two genres he’s incorporated in each song, so it can be a lot to take in on first listen. Though I’ve never been much into jazz, coupling it with metal makes it much more enjoyable. That said, Greg Rapaport is yet another reason why instrumental music should not be overlooked.
