Gra & Gnosis of the Witch
Gra/Gnosis of the Witch (Split)
April 2015
Released: 2015, Iron Bonehead Productions
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: UK Team

The dark elements of Scandinavian spirituality are topics I’ve never seen before in black metal, but they’ll certainly hold up in lyrics sung in their native tongues as this split has demonstrated. Swedish outfit Gra have teamed up with Americans Gnosis of the Witch to deliver black metal majestically.

Gra open this spilt with a track that is raw and hypnotic with morosity delivered in one of the primary black metal languages. ‘Valitus ja Kaipuu’ explores mystical themes with buzzsaw guitars that made me think of Ragnarok and Carpathian Forest, something quite impressive and left me wanting to hear more from this group.

And the US’s Gnosis of the Witch give us an avalanche of sound and vocals reminiscent of Dark Fortress and a beat that is uplifting and invigorating to please anyone who wants something to cheer them up after a hard day or a heavy weekend. This is black metal given as the ideal remedy to moments of anxiety and personal anguish.

A nice split that offers equally beautiful black metal from both sides of the Atlantic.
