Grave Robber
Be Afraid
November 2008
Released: 2008, Retroactive Records/Music Buy Mail/Artistworkxx
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

I was a bit confused when I opened the booklet and saw the pictures of the band. The label is a Christian label and the band looks like a satanic act with masks and aliases. The members say that the band name is taken from a song by Petra that references Jesus return as the true grave robber. The band was formed in 2005 and the bio states the music to be a version of goth/hardrock l..

When I pushed play I heard fast punk mixed with rock/rockabilly that had influences of shock rock. The beat is fast, mean, brutal and aggressive and not what you could have expected from a Christian act. If you want some musical parallels I can mention The Misfits, Danzig and Rob Zombie. You have to hear Grave Robber to know what I mean because the band has their own style and image.

15 tracks are featured on BE AFRAID and that includes a bonus track, “Rigor Mortis”, which is a remix done by Angel from the band Dope. The 15 songs are run through in a fast pace. The album clocks in at 40 minutes. The material is great and luckily the band hasn’t featured the typical Christian message in their lyrics. Look at the titles and you know what I mean. There isn’t a single bad track but the thing that drags down the rating is the band’s ridiculous band names and their masks. The lame remix of “Rigor Mortis” isn’t much to be happy about either.

If you focus on the songs and the production you’ll find that this album is actually really good. I really like the bands rockabilly/rock Goth approach and I can imagine buying their next album, but only if I don’t have to look directly at the members. BE AFRAID was a pleasant surprise and it’s fun to hear that Christian music is not only about lame melodic rock music.
