God Among Insects
World Wide Death
November 2004
Released: 2004, Candlelight
Rating: 1.5/5
Reviewer: MetalGeorge

This is a release that was receiving all kinds of hype and buzz, so naturally I was very intrigued to check it out. Featuring members of Dark Funeral, The Project Hate, and Vomitory, God Among Insects are yet another "old school death" project. Is it me, or do these bands seem to be popping up everywhere these days?

Anyways, I digress. The main question which we're faced with is whether or not GAI is worth a toss, right? Well, unfortunately, it seems that the well of "old school death" inspiration seem to have gone dry, and in it's place a pool of downtuned nu-metal silliness, because WORLD WIDE DEATH kinda stinks of stangnant water, if you smell what I'm cookin'.

While I appreciate the sentiment behind this release, WORLD WIDE DEATH sound more like Six Feet Under than Entombed. First of all, the guitars are way too downtuned; they have this 7 string Slipknot tone to them that I'm just not a fan of. In addition, the vocals of Emperor Magus Caligula are way too deep and grunting for my taste. To be honest, he sounds more silly than frightening, and I just shouldn't be laughing when I listen to my death metal.

Beyond this, however, this album just isn't exciting. The song structures are boring and repetitive. They don't go anywhere. Even tracks like "Purified in Carnage", that start off promising, lose their luster after the same goddamned riff is pummelled into your head for the 10th time in a row.

WORLD WIDE DEATH is an album that just didn't need to be. It takes up space where a metal album that actually offers something of value could sit. Sure, metalheads who don't demand that much from their DM might find a modicum of worth in this snoozefest, but I'm not betting on it. In fact, my best is that this record is just the result of some big names with a little extra time and money on their hands. There's no passion or feeling whatsoever in this music.

Avoid this.
