Glenn Hughes
Live in Australia (DVD)
January 2008
Released: 2007, Edel Records/Playground Music
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

This is the DVD of the Australian acoustic show Glenn Hughes recorded last summer. The CD is also reviewed this month, so check out that review for further info.

In the CD review I wrote that the audience was really quiet and didn’t make too much noise; in fact, it was hard to tell that it was a live show. Well, the people are sitting down in what appears to be a fancy restaurant to just watch the show. At the end when Hughes plays “Mistreated” and other classical tracks they wake up and makes some noise, but that’s about it. The show is nicely shot with great lighting and a crystal-clear sound, no member stands in the dark and even the string orchestra behind Hughes is filmed. Hughes plays acoustic guitar until the ninth song, which is the cover of the well-known song “A Whiter Shade of Pale” where he switches to bass. Not many bass players can look as cool as Hughes does at his age.

“Mistreated” is stretched out and it’s not the best version I’ve heard of the song, but Hughes seems to be in a great mood and jokes around with both the audience and the musicians. Before he introduced his long-time friend Jimmy Barnes he plays “Soul Mover” from one of his later solo albums. Barnes and Hughes do “Getting Tighter” together and after that end the show, but there’s (of course) an encore which is “You Keep Me Moving” before the show finally ends. The DVD and the CD are of equal length but the DVD has videos to the songs “Monkey Man”, “This House” and “The Divine” as a bonus. All three videos are promos taken from Hughes’ latest album MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE. More bonus stuff includes a history of Hughes and a bonus photo gallery.

The menu is easily maneuvered and the different stuff is easy to find. The DVD and CD are a perfect combination and if you can’t get enough of Hughes I advise you to buy both the CD and DVD.
