Rating: 4.0/5

On their fifth album the United Kingdom’s most interesting Pagan Metal band, Forefather has simply surpassed itself. Taking their trademark sound, which has been called “Anglo Saxon Metal” a step further, STEADFAST proves to be a varied album that seamlessly mixes Pagan, Viking, Folk, Black and Traditional Metal influences into one unique and satisfying sound.

Tracks such as “Cween of the Mark”, “Three Great Ships” and “Fire From the Sky” display the diversity on show and it all works to create a distinct and vibrant album. I really enjoyed the very natural, even “earthy” production values which have added an authenticity to the album that forsakes the sterile, often over produced feel that many of their peers adopt. Adding to the atmosphere are the very creative vocal lines that run the gamut from clean to guttural. The vocals never sound forced and are used with care to create an epic and triumphant quality. Also of note are the very clever arrangements and traditional “hooks” in the songs. There are a massive amount of memorable moments throughout STEADFAST and that makes listening to it such a cool experience. It goes without saying that the album will receive repeated spins and that’s always the mark of a great release.

It has taken four long years since the release of their excellent last album OURS IS THE KINGDOM, but I must say that the duo that is Wulfstan and Athelstan have done a brilliant job with STEADFAST, even surpassing it’s predecessor in some ways. Fans of Viking/Pagan Metal should pick up this album immediately, but Traditional Metal fans should seek STEADFAST out as well.
