Final Sign
Hold High The Flame
July 2016
Released: 2015, Tribunal Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

It’s always good to have new Metal warriors enter the battlefield and it’s nice to welcome Final Sign to the army. This American band released their debut album later in 2015 and it caught my ear right away and now, getting through the backlog of new albums as we hit the slower part of 2016, I can put down a few thoughts about their debut album, HOLD HIGH THE FLAME.

A little on the short-side at eight songs and 38 minutes, Final Sign strip away the extras, such as orchestral or spoken word intro and get right to business with the punchy opening cut ‘ Daring The Sun’. It is a meaty and fast number; traditional US Power Metal not unlike Vicious Rumors. Up next is ‘Burn The Temple Down’ and elsewhere we get the title track, another ‘fire’ song which seems to be a bit of a lyrical theme for the debut. The album maintains a really good driving pace with lots of double-kick drums, you could almost say bordering on thrash at times, as for example the song ‘Possessor’, but not quite. The vocals of Shawn Pelata are very decent and in fact everyone is very competent in the performance area. The songs are short and pretty catchy, good choruses and good traditional metal song structures.

HOLD HIGH THE FLAME boats good production with a nice thick guitar tone that add to the appeal of this record. Wrap it all up with cool cover art depicting a barbarian/warrior about to do battle with a bunch of demons in the dark, and you have a winner. This is a solid record and I hope they continue to hold high the flame of US Power Metal.
