Finntroll is one of those bands for me that hasn´t let me down thus far as far as their previous four releases are concerned. Even if these Finn trolls´ previous EP VISOR OM SLUTET showed us Finntroll under a gloomier and more experimental moonlight musically, on this new 5-song EP they have (nearly) returned into a mould of the folk´ish atmospheres of their last full-length album JAKTEN´S TID which, I believe, should be sort of a relief for many, I guess.
When the title track of this EP, “Trollhammaren”, is kicked hard and absolutely determinedly in the air by our ´krigsmjöd´ -loving furry trolls, you start feeling a strong and urgent need to welcome Finntroll back with their full arsenal for very heavily folk´ish elements that they seem to possess better and more convincing way than any other similar sounding bands around us in today´s metal scene. The song “Trollhammaren” is simply nothing, but an excellent proof of these guys´ skills to come up with amazingly catchy, memorable and even very uplifting sounds of the traditional Folk music and metal in the very same package. The song flows very effortlessly and just nicely from start to finish and I bet eventually you will find yourself humming the song over and over and all over again without you even noticing it.
“Hemkomst” is a very fast tempo Finntroll –tune again wit some really tasty melodic and folk´ish sections that have a pure Finntroll –trademark carved into each of them with big, screaming letters; followed by “Skog” which doesn´t get any bad word from me either. It shows us a more epic and bombastic side of Finntroll, oddly reminding me of something Dimmu Borgir has done in some of their most epic sounding tracks? And I´m not exaggerating at all, just believe me dear folks! I guess it´s overall the synth parts that make it to sound that way, ´a bit´ like a Dimmu Borgir –song. Please do keep in you mind that I only said, ´a bit...´.
“Försvinn Du Som Lyser” is again contains faster type of Finntroll –rhythms, riffs, etc., - the familiar and much loved Finntroll way, I´d say. The last song on this 5-tracker, “Helvete” is the heaviest and darkest ´troll killer´ out of TROLLHAMMAREN, having a real nasty, dark and positively frightening atmosphere through the whole song which definitely scares all creatures away from the nearest forests around a troll cave. It´s probably my fave Finntroll –song on this new EP, too along with the title track, of course!
Simply ´a-must-have´ EP from Finntroll. Gotta love these trolls once again...
