Complete Best-A Decade of Fair Warning
Released: 2002, Avalon
This is a Japanese ‘Best of’ compilation that seems to be a pretty lame contractual obligation. It is a nice starter for those fans who are unfamiliar with this long-running German, melodic metal combo, but for existing fans of the band it is pretty weak.
Essentially, this disc takes songs from each of the four studio CD’s. There are no liner notes, hardly any pictures and the graphic design is bad. It is good value at 77 minutes and 17 songs but for some odd reason they only picked one cut from ‘Rainmaker’ CD. They do include lyrics, but nothing else. I’ll never understand how these people who put these together come to these decisions. There is a three-song bonus disc with alternate versions of already released songs, although they aren’t even listed in the liner notes! I had to go onto the net to figure out what songs they were. I guess the die-hard might want this comp for those three rare songs although I didn’t think they were significantly different than the originals.
I just thought I’d throw a quick review out there to say, the band is top-notch melodic metal and it is a shame that they are no longer active. They deserve recognition. Seek out the studio CD’s first, then the multitude of Live CD’s and Japanese only EP’s. Those who are interested can read Rick’s excellent review of their last full-length studio CD entitled ‘Four’
