Finnr’s Cane
A Portrait Painted By The Sun
November 2013
Released: 2013, Prophecy Productions
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team

Finnr’s Cane, Canada’s emerging behemoth of Atmospheric Black Metal, have returned once again from the vast rocky plains of their homeland with an all new set of tunes to dazzle any fan of Ambient music or any sort of dark poetry. ‘A Portrait Painted By The Sun’ is the band’s second release and there’s no denying these guys have matured with their inclusion of cellos, a piano and acoustic guitars in all the right places.

‘The Old Oak’ opens the album with a folk-rock feel, accompanied by the sounds of howling winds to take you into the depths of bleak melancholy Finnr’s Cane have ready for you. A proper aura of darkness and sorrow accompanies this and ‘Gallery of the Sun and Stars’ which reminded me of Winterfylleth and Wolves In The Throne Room. Being able to emulate such fantastic bands told me this album was onto a winner. This was certainly realised with the mid-album instrumental piece ‘Wind In The Wells’ that carries elements of improvised Jazz and more folky acoustics.

To round this gem off are ‘A Great Storm’ and ‘Tao’, both come bearing riffs similar to Immortal and early Burzum. For fans of every Black Metal sub-genre, this album will please you from start to finish. The unsung heroes of Canadian Black Metal certainly won’t leave you disappointed. Give this release a blast next time you spend a cold winter’s night in with plenty of candles.
