Final Curse
Constructing the Destructive + 2-song promo 2009
November 2009
Released: 2008, Self-released
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Thrash metal. We all love that heavier form of heavy metal genre, well – at least most of us.

So does Final Curse, this 4-piece thrash metal group from Charlotte, North Carolina, that was formed in 2006. The band names bands like Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera, Metallica, etc. as their influences, and undoubtedly when spinning through Final Curse´s debut full-length disc, CONSTRUCTING THE DESTRUCTIVE, that they released last year on their own, some of those aforementioned acts´ influences can be heard in their stuff. The guys in Final Curse have surely done their mandatory home lessons by listening some of those classic thrash metal albums from KILL ´EM ALL to SHOW NO MERCY to PEACE SELLS…

What is good on CONSTRUCTING…, some of the riffing and some solos are overall pretty well done, and I cannot say a bad word about Mike´s vocal work either that has a lot of true underground feel and vibe in it – like back in the underground demo days of 80s. What on the other hand, is less good on their debut album, I think some of their song structures just drag too much, or are somehow clumsy and not that well constructed. Also, the production leaves some space to be hoped for. It´s not heavy enough, especially the drums´ sound is unfortunately far from being satisfying enough. If they had spent just a bit more time with all these minus aspects listed above before entering the studio to record the album, then the result would have been much more enjoyable and tolerable, I think.

As for the 2 songs on their promo go that they had kindly included together with their debut album, I gotta say the band has improved drastically in every area. In “Reaper of Justice”, the riffing – as well as soloing have both taken a turn into a sharper and more controlled direction, almost coming out from like Mr. Mustaine´s 6-stringer shredding machine. After all, this song is so much better than any of their other songs on the debut record of theirs. And the exactly same words could be used for that other song (“Christiansanity”) on this very promising 2-song promotional CD-R. The riffing, solo work and basically the whole structure of the song is more complex and just more thought out, which just tells these guys are fully into improving and bettering their playing style, and naturally that way making a better impact on its listeners. “Christiansanity” also has this heavy Death-type of crawling riff that sits with the band´s sound really well, I think.

Only basing my opinion on the overall quality of the band´s 2-song promo, here´s a new serious thrash metal band to be reckoned with in the future, so keep your eyes carefully out for them.
