Midnight Poems
July 2005
Released: 2005, Gaga Goodies
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: MetalGeorge

With the rising success of H.I.M. and Nightwish here in North America, the window of opportunity for Finnish artists to make an impact seems to be getting larger and larger. Enter fellow Finns Feiled (say that three times fast), and their debut effort MIDNIGHT POEMS, which is very much in the melancholic Rock/Metal style of their contemporaries, such as Entwine and the aforementioned H.I.M.

Combining a smooth, clean rock sound with vocalist Anton’s knack for melodic, memorable choruses, Feiled seem to have their game plan for world domination all mapped out and ready to go. Nowhere is this more evident then within the album’s first single, “The Great Escape”. This track, with it’s ethereal keyboard melody and driving chorus, serves as a perfect blueprint for what the band has to offer, and could even fit well in commercial radio, if given the chance.

Indeed, MIDNIGHT POEMS is very much a song-driven record. Varying moods and tempos keep things interesting, while the engaging voice of Anton lures the listener in with his charismatic presence and seductive sense of melody. Songs such as “Contagious”, “End of Love”, “Heavens Falling Down”, and album opener “Dive” showcase this extremely well, as does the aforementioned “Great Escape”.

While Feiled’s romantic persona may not sit well with dyed-in-the-wool thrash-heads, fans of the lighter side of Goth Metal are highly advised to seek this one out via mailorder or the Internet, particularly devotees of fellow Finnish acts such as To Die For. It seems like things can only go up from here, so I anxiously await how the band follows this up. In the meantime, MIDNIGHT POEMS is a stellar start, and a great way to seduce that special someone. Check it out.
